Tips on How to Treat Cystitis

What is Cystitis? Medicine defines cystitis as the inflammation of the bladder mostly caused by E. coli infections. Bacterial infection by E. coli, normally found in the rectal area of the body which ascends to the bladder by way of the urethra, the tube that is responsible for passing out of urine. Cystitis affects greatly women. Recurrent cystitis could cause potential damage to your kidneys. Early detection is the key in preventing the occurrence of such syndrome.

• Frequent painful urination
• Burning or stinging sensation during urination
• Malodorous smell of urine

1. “Holding on” too long on the urge to urinate is the major cause of cystitis. So urinate as soon as you would feel the urge to pee is the best form of prevention.

2. Increased daily oral fluid intake. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily.

3. Improve your hygiene, shower or wash yourself at least 2x a day. Women should wipe from front to back after urination. This reduces the possibility of transferring E. coli, the bacteria responsible for cystitis to be transferred from your anus to your bladder.

4. Avoid tight fitting clothes. Use cotton underpants instead.

5. After sexual intercourse, encouraged yourself to pass urine. This promotes flushing out of any bacteria that might have been transferred.

Cystitis can easily be managed depending on its complexities. However, home remedies are still available as help for you when you encounter such problem. The following are ways by which you could relieve cystitis.

1. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Reduce your intake of coffee and alcohol. These products are known irritant to your bladder.

2. Apply hot water bag or hot bottle in between your legs or at your back or abdomen, depending on the area that hurts to relieve pain.

3. Add 1 tsp. of baking soda in a glass of water. Sodium bicarbonate products like baking soda will make urine less acidic. Baking soda also relieves burning sensation felt during urination.

4. Visit your doctor if the symptoms continue for more than 24 hours. Follow the whole course of antibiotics prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop the treatment until told so.
